National Vertical Marathon 2007

National Vertical Marathon 2007 organised by NTU sports club will be held on the 25th Feb (Sunday) from 7am-7pm. This year's is at Republic Plaza, somewhere outside Raffles Place MRT, 66 storeys, 280 metres. Registration fee is $18 for open and $14 for Inter-Jc team challenge (min 2 males and 2 females in a team of 5)

FYI last year's was 43 storeys, 181m. Shouldn't take more than 30 minutes max. and it's doable (: perfect opportunity for countering the CNY goodies (:

hope all of u had a merry merry xmas!

back to revive this blog a bit or else its almost like dead. haha. anw its cool reading about laotians and cambodians from muddy and sau..n suddenly realising how forturnate we're to be living like how we're living now.

great to be learning new things! hmm me n xinying learnt a lot too from the taiwan immersion prog (althou not girls carring parangs like tote bags).

erm so for 18 days we were stuck with each other and im glad to have her company larh. esp when im sick for the last few days..gotta her thank a lot for taking care of me given her unsymphathetic nature (stil laff at me becos of my bad hair day and sick voice). eh btw, does she even read this blog?

my geog classmates! beaches without sand exist!

the whole beach is filled with rocks like these! i duno about u all but its my first time seeing so i was very very amazed!

and we saw statues with weird poses like....

these! (lol we laffed like mad here)

and we learnt that taiwan is in year 95 cos they count from their independence in 1911.

haha!

ok larh there're a lot a lot more pics but its impossible to upload all. and so for 2 weeks, xinying n me were dressed in bumble bee uniforms....experiencing the cold weather but the warmth of the taiwanese students! 1st time being in an all-girls school for both of us...n also did a lot of things for the 1st time!

like : making pottery, watching the military band march(with the flags n guns n everything..it was cool!), taking lessons in chinese and hearing weird terms for mathematics, strolling along the jingmei river which almost looks like our big longkang, break a gun into many different parts, hit the chinese drums, learning dragon dance, wrote chinese poems, sang aboriginal songs and learnt aboriginal dance( n omg we were forced to perform at the farewell ceremonies), went to the pottery museum and science discovery centre, ate ice-cream when we were freezing, drank tea from teapots at some cosy place where we met fellow singaporeans, watched a french movie n we all cried, played badminton together n we miss pe!, played paintball shooting, made pineapple tarts, did some espf measurement thing(similar to our napfa), learnt how to dance opera, learnt chinese painting, made creative little slides, learnt archery, played with the cheling(some traditional chinese toy that is like a yoyo) and tried to learn the trick 'ants up the tree', made our own weirdly-shaped dumplings, practised hip-hop while watching wochaiwochaiwochaichaichai on the tv, wrote xmas cards till 3am and heard weird noises, saw everything we could of each other in the hotspring and we also went to touristy places like taipei 101, danshui, shilin, ximending, etc etc.

haha impossible to blog in detail now-u-know. yarh n btw after this taiwan trip, me n xinying are gonna treasure singapore's toilet bowls n rubbish bins.

okok enuff about taiwan i miss it a lot already. hope u guys had loads of fun too this holidays! whether u went overseas or found a job. if possible, blog about it and dun let our blog die larh ok.

erm and 2007 is coming real soon yea! hmm jus wanna say that i lurve u guys as my classmates n im thankful to be in so5b no matter how screwed up we are. next year will be the last year as classmates so hopefully we'll treasure one another! n next year's impt so lets mug tgt and prove that we're not that screwed up n not make ppl laugh at the 5 classes during the evaluation of common tests result. all the best for the year ahead n make sure u make new resolutions n keep them! erm n..im looking forward to next year! hope u guys think so too!

hope u all enjoying ur hols too.. yup i agree w muddy, i guess going to all these asean countries make u realize how lucky u all are. and for all those taking geog, it brings out a whole new meaning to all those nonsense ur studying, like how tourism is so evil it erodes the culture, so true. and how war can really tear up a country.

yes it was really humbling for me too. n altho like most of the cambodians end up farmers they are actually super advanced in their studies n are super intelligent, prob more intellligent than us, and thus we got majorly owned when we tried to teach them english. but they were just so humble. yeah.

good to go on these cip trips;D and well enjoy the rest of the hols ppl! i guess we really must haf some major photosharing session when sch starts! keeping in mind xinying n pingni still in taiwan! heh i'm in guangzhou now in fact.

back from the laos trip! must tell you all, laotian kids super super strong. they're quite small built compared to singaporeans, so imagine a 9 year old kid weighing barely 10 kg carrying not one, but TWO buckets filled with cement (abt 5kg each) and they can easily outwalk me. BAREFOOTED too.

very humbling experience there, my best attempt at chopping bamboo was 7 hits, worse was 20+++ and it still didn't want to break. haha, the womenfolk there, (some old lady) did it in 4 hits! and the kids can easily swim in the river without getting washed by the current, which is quite substantial.

and all kids above 12 get their personal parang i think. the girls carry it like it's some tote bag under their arm. how imba is that.

anw for my first post here. i think i just wanna thank everyone in class for not giving up on me tho i hafta admit i gave up on a nice funky class at the start of the yr. din really love our class but i DO now! really! cun haf asked for a more retarded/fun/happening/silly/slacker/blahblahanything class! hahah:D plus a bomb civics tutor! well. we've really been thru a lot since the beginning of the yr huh.. from a class w icy cold stares i think we've more or less come thus far into quite a cohesive class:D yayness:D ok i love my class now. ssssh, dont tell anyone but i love u guys more than council ok! yay!

anw the check in time is ard 2 plus so we meet at 2 at pasir ris mrt okay? then we can take the bus down together. i think theres a shuttle bus, if not can take this public bus 3-sth-sth. those who are coming late can give me/ seetoh/ yucong a msg so we werent be waiting for u? so far i know jerryca, pingni, james, zhidong not joining us in the afternoon. then when u guys are reaching give us a call so we can tell u where to find us!

so jus bring along extra clothes, swimsuit if u wana go for a dip, toiletries, basically the stuuff that u usually bring for chalet, and some cards and games and snacks!

A follow up to Gillian's post, since we watched the movie together.

This review is mostly spoiler free.

L takes the cake, literally or not.

L was really cute. Well, not cute!cute, but weird!cute. They kept all of his quirks in the manga - the toothache-inducing dieting habits, that hunched posture and the general anti-socialness were a delight to watch. Had Raito known his real name in the manga, he could easily have made L die of diabetes and NO ONE would have suspected a thing. Seriously. All I can say is, Matsuyama Kenichi makes a much better L than a Shin (in NANA) - it's the hair, I'm telling you. I need animated L icons now. X_x

Movie!Watari really looks... Watari. XD The actor should win an award for being the closest replica of his character in the manga.

Movie!Raito had not enough personality - not bored enough, not genius enough, not evil enough - too normal. Being the Raito fan I am, it was disappointing. What happened to the megalomania, the 'I-am-god-I-am-justice-and-I-pwn-j00'? He still bags that Oscar award for being a highly convincing actor, though. They downplayed his genius by excluding a lot of the details originally in the manga which truly showcased his great scheming abilities, so basically movie!Raito morphed from manipulative bastard to normal-and-somewhat-emo person who probably contributed to deforestation by wasting a lot of pages of the Death Note (he wasted one entire page writing a single name). Ouch. Fujiwara Tatsuya (the same guy in Battle Royale) is so unRaito, but at least he can act, so that saves us the pain of bad acting (again, think NANA).

I still do not really see the point in introducing a completely new character. What was Shiori (Raito's girlfriend, in case you have a tendency to forget her existence, like me) supposed to show, honestly? ~~That Raito wasn't completely gay? Well, if that was the case it certainly backfired.~~ Her appearance screwed up the entire timeline and as far as I could see it, apart from taking over Takada's role to aid Raito to kill the FBI agents she was pretty much extra.

Overall, the movie was okay as a standalone, though the action was not on par with the original manga until the last two deaths. The rest of the scheming was much less complex, less intelligent - why? Because they did not follow the manga. So yes, like mentioned in the previous post, READ THE MANGA kthxbai.

That said, I can't wait for the sequel in November. The low point in this movie was the lack of L-Raito interaction, save the ending, which was zomgexciting!11!!11! I hope the next part screws with my brain more, because that's what Death Note really is - brain candy.

Why you should read the Death Note manga:

1) More detailed and explains more stuff than the movie

2) Movie is quite different from manga. Raito (Light) has better characterisation in the manga and is more intelligent XD

3) Raye (the fbi) part was VERY different. His fiancee plays a VERY different role in the manga

4) Light looks 95843 times better in the manga

anws, since today being a boring day, here's how we, the handful of da 5b noobs spent our time which much meaning and cause. =P

11.00 --> break ; 10 minutes stoning. pingni bounced up from her seat, " hey lets play cards. i got cards. how how how?" the few of us agreed. proceeded to playing.... but realised one innocent member, lacks experience in the art of bridge. the grp carries on playing, with boon hadi and in the end just seetoh, to teach 'we know who' how to play da game. it was mightily fun.... for those who kept winning and taking advantage of the naive of course.

"hey lets play uno stacko!!!" the rest, "ya ya lets go. sauling pls get sumthing from council room, anything! wheee!" aft skipping to and back, uno stacko commenced! oh wow. wasnt it fun saboeing each other with double cards. boon n em hadi, being the 2 noobs hu kepts toppling the stack. but awww, time was up. it wasnt nature who called, but merely physics pract.... *yawns.

2 hrs of zombying ard. back to canteen. "sauling!!! get uno stacko again!!!!" "dun want" "pingni go borrowwwww plssss" "haiyaaa" (fast forward) playing commenced. was it boon or seetoh who toppled it first. wdv it is they were to main culprits lol. joel with his 'tactics' n jerryca with her "shutup"s. haha.

The story behind the characters vary depending on which version of the comic you read anyway. Oh and I never did say that Ryu went to school, only that he was a pre-school drop-out. Maybe he dropped out of his cot when he was young. Of course you could argue that if he never went to school, that shouldn't be considered a pre-school event, to which I'd ask if a tree falls in the forest when nobody's around, does it still make a noise? Will Schrodinger's cat live?

For something more serious, I've had a look at everyone's results for all subjects so far and it looks pretty alright. If you've met your targeted results, then be contented and not envy others or it will never end and you'll end up in IMH one fine day worrying about stuff like that. If you haven't, then you may want to think about what went wrong. Unrealistic expectations? Unsuitable studying strategy? Mental block during the papers? Doing silly things like sleeping at 3am just before a paper? Act on it. If you didn't have targets to reach in the first place... well if it works for you, that's fine too. Not everyone is driven by such stuff but if things aren't working out, it's worth trying out.

Windows XP can look sexy but displaying all the visual items can waste system resources. To optimise:

Go to Start
Click Settings
Click Control Panel
Click System
Click Advanced tab
In the Performance tab click Settings
Leave only the following ticked:
Show shadows under menus
Show shadows under mouse pointer
Show translucent selection rectangle
Use drop shadows for icons labels on the desktop
Use visual styles on windows and buttons

3. Speedup Folder Browsing

You may have noticed that everytime you open my computer to browse folders that there is a slight delay. This is because Windows XP automatically searches for network files and printers everytime you open Windows Explorer. To fix this and to increase browsing significantly:

Open My Computer
Click on Tools menu
Click on Folder Options
Click on the View tab.
Uncheck the Automatically search for network folders and printers check box
Click Apply
Click Ok
Reboot your computer

4. Disable Performance Counters

Windows XP has a performance monitor utility which monitors several areas of your PC’s performance. These utilities take up system resources so disabling is a good idea.
To disable:
download and install the Extensible Performance Counter List
Then select each counter in turn in the ‘Extensible performance counters’ window and clear the ‘performance counters enabled’ checkbox at the bottom.button below

5. Improve Memory Usage

Cacheman Improves the performance of your computer by optimizing the disk cache, memory and a number of other settings.
Once Installed:
Go to Show Wizard and select All
Run all the wizards by selecting Next or Finished until you are back to the main menu. Use the defaults unless you know exactly what you are doing
Exit and Save Cacheman
Restart Windows

6. Optimise your internet connection

There are lots of ways to do this but by far the easiest is to run TCP/IP Optimizer.
Download and install
Click the General Settings tab and select your Connection Speed (Kbps)
Click Network Adapter and choose the interface you use to connect to the Internet
Check Optimal Settings then Apply
Reboot

7. Optimise Your Pagefile

If you give your pagefile a fixed size it saves the operating system from needing to resize the page file.
Right click on My Computer and select Properties
Select the Advanced tab
Under Performance choose the Settings button
Select the Advanced tab again and under Virtual Memory select Change
Highlight the drive containing your page file and make the initial Size of the file the same as the Maximum Size of the file.
Windows XP sizes the page file to about 1.5X the amount of actual physical memory by default. While this is good for systems with smaller amounts of memory (under 512MB) it is unlikely that a typical XP desktop system will ever need 1.5 X 512MB or more of virtual memory. If you have less than 512MB of memory, leave the page file at its default size. If you have 512MB or more, change the ratio to 1:1 page file size to physical memory size.

8. Run BootVis - Improve Boot Times

BootVis will significantly improve boot times
Download and Run
Select Trace
Select Next Boot and Driver Trace
A Trace Repetitions screen will appear, select Ok and Reboot
Upon reboot, BootVis will automatically start, analyze and log your system’s boot process. When it’s done, in the menu go to Trace and select Optimize System
Reboot.
When your machine has rebooted wait until you see the Optimizing System box appear. Be patient and wait for the process to complete

9. Remove the Desktop Picture

Your desktop background consumes a fair amount of memory and can slow the loading time of your system. Removing it will improve performance.
Right click on Desktop and select Properties
Select the Desktop tab
In the Background window select None
Click Ok

10. Remove Fonts for Speed

Fonts, especially TrueType fonts, use quite a bit of system resources. For optimal performance, trim your fonts downto just those that you need to use on a daily basis and fonts that applications may require.
Open Control Panel
Open Fonts folder
Move fonts you don’t need to a temporary directory (e.g. C:\FONTBKUP?) just in case you need or want to bring a fewof them back. The more fonts you uninstall, the more system resources you will gain.

done. trust me. it helps alot. yep. but the lat one, must take note, cos once you uninstall the fonts, you can't use them, have to paste them back into the fonts folder in order to use them. yep. just take 1-2 hours doing all the 10 tips, will make your com run at least 40% faster.

And not to risk sounding like a gigantic killjoy...yah all the results back today. Not very pleased with mine(in fact NOT AT ALL, I AM DAMN SORE AND BITTER!1!1!) but the truth is! I might think I had studied very hard! And that these results are probably not a good reflection of the amount of effort put in, but seriously. Whatever it is, I probably did not work hard enough. Why do some people do better than me? There must have been that extra bit of hard work put in while I was slacking or whining. We are in the same class afterall, going to the same lectures, doing the same tutorials. Some of us do better than the other because we work harder. Not talking about myself of course. My learning style was kinda skewed this time round.

I think there are a couple of good examples in the class we can learn from. We're going to be j2s next year, time to be more serious and focused. No more laughing at people who are mugging, no more slacking off tutorials, time to put in that energy to listen during lectures. After today, when I see some people getting Bs and Cs for physics, its really quite uplifting you know, no matter how stupid this might sound. It means there is HOPE PEOPLE! PHYSICS IS NOT DOOMED! ALRIGHT! Feel more cheered ok, for those feeling down about your results. Like what muddy says, time to re-strategise!

Ok I feel damn preachy and moralistic now. Would like to say I am glad to be in this class no matter how sulky and cranky I can be, for you all to listen to me whine and angst haha.

actually dun haf much to say that has relevanec to the class but i would like to share a lil something that happened to me today. i was on the bus back from somewhere, was coughing like mad cos i fell sick (probably the haze/lemin). den an old lady sitting in front of my suddenly spoke to me in jibberish and handed me a tissue with a weird smell (smell of some chinese medicated oilment). after abt 5 secs of her speaking i finally made out the language in which she was speaking.. mandarin. she said something abt telling me to sniff "xi" the tissue, in which i did which made me feel much better. throughout the ride home i nvr coughed.

moral of the story? - chinese medicine is better than it seems.

no actually what i wana say is, when was the last time u did something nice? or someone did something nice to u. i think the world can be a better place with more nice ppl arnd. so next time if someone's been nice to u, think abt what i said and take the opportunity to be nice to someone else. for u dont know how much it can lighten one's day, like what the old lady did for me today.
